Originally founded as a solo outlet by Carl Skildum (Threadbare, Antiverse, Obsequiae live lineup), Inexorum is also joined by Matthew Kirkwold (RIAA certified gold producer, also of Antiverse and Obsequiae live lineup) and serves as an outlet for Skildum’s personal compositions that felt connected through similar energies and inspirations all their own.
Skildum elaborates, “For Inexorum, a foundational source of inspiration is the melodic intersection between black and death metal that developed when both of those scenes were pretty young. The early/mid-90s No Fashion and Necropolis rosters of Sacramentum, Dawn, Unanimated, and Mörk Gryning were inspiring to me back then and remain exciting now.”
Although inspired heavily by the sound and tone of those early genres, the heavy lyrical content behind Inexorum comes from a far more secular and personal place. Themes of struggle and grief carry the torch throughout the album’s duration, focusing far more on the common thread of our ability to navigate the trials throughout our lives and become stronger through that suffering. To heal.
Skildum goes on to say, “In so many ways we are fumbling in the dark, but even there we can find elements of beauty. The title track represents that nocturnal journey to moments of clarity and calm, framed in reverence for the beauty of our natural world. The overarching theme is personal transitions through hardship towards some degree of recovery.”
“Moonlit Navigation” is a document of triumph that travels upon a path paved with dense, searing riffs and pummeling rhythm. Skildum’s powerful vocals, melodic compositions, and intense lyrics coupled with Kirkwold’s masterful production prove to be a combination of considerable force.
“My hope is that if anyone were to take anything out of the lyrics it is a recognition of their own strength and ability to persist despite whatever external or internal resistance they may be facing.” Skildum concludes.
